ScamTrapAlert Privacy Policy

ScamTrapAlert (“we”, “the extension”) is a Chrome extension that helps you detect scams, phishing, and manipulation in text on web pages you choose to scan.

What data we collect

• Text you scan — When you click Scan or use auto-scan, the extension reads text from the active page (for example a chat or email thread) and sends it to our backend server for AI analysis.
• Anonymous device ID — A random ID stored in your browser (Chrome local storage) to enforce a daily free scan limit. It is not linked to your name or Google account by us.
• Settings and history — Sensitivity, auto-scan preference, and recent scan results are stored locally in your browser unless you clear extension data.

What we do not collect

• We do not require you to sign in.
• We do not intentionally collect passwords, payment card numbers, or government ID numbers.
• We do not sell your personal data.

How data is used

Page text is sent over HTTPS to our backend API, which forwards it to a third-party AI provider (Groq) to produce a risk analysis. The API key for that service stays on our server, not in the extension.

We use scans only to provide analysis and to count usage against your daily limit. We do not use your content for advertising.

Data retention

Analyzed text is processed for the request and is not stored by us as a permanent message archive. Anonymous daily scan counts may be kept on our server until midnight UTC to enforce quotas. Data on your device (history, settings) remains until you uninstall the extension or clear its storage.

Third parties

• Hosting — Our API may run on cloud hosting (for example Render).
• AI analysis — Groq (groq.com) processes the text you submit for scanning. Their privacy policy applies to that processing.
• Google Chrome Web Store — Distribution and updates are provided by Google.

Permissions

The extension requests access to web pages so it can read text when you scan and show highlights. It only sends text to our server when you trigger a scan (or when auto-scan is enabled in settings).

Children

ScamTrapAlert is not directed at children under 13.

Your choices

• Do not scan pages you do not want analyzed.
• Turn off auto-scan in extension Settings.
• Uninstall the extension to remove locally stored data.

Security

Communication with our API uses HTTPS. Keep your browser and extension updated.

Changes

We may update this policy. The “Last updated” date will change when we do.
